Wait Until 8th

The Gower Foundation is endorsing the 'Wait Until 8th Program in our district. Read more below:

As smartphones become more common at younger ages, many parents are asking: When is the right time? It’s not an easy decision—and we know every family is different.

One resource some families have found helpful is the Wait Until 8th pledge. It encourages parents to delay giving their child a smartphone until at least the end of 8th grade—and to do so alongside other families, easing some of the pressure to keep up.

Many parents worry about how early smartphone use affects kids. Research has linked heavy smartphone use to increased anxiety, distraction, sleep issues, and exposure to things like cyberbullying and inappropriate content. It can be tough to navigate these challenges alone.

Here are a few key things to know:

  • The pledge is for smartphones only. Families can still stay connected using basic phones or smartwatches with limited features.

  • It works best when done together. Once 10 or more families in the same grade take the pledge, it becomes “active,” and parents are connected with others who are also choosing to wait from their child’s grade.

  • It’s completely optional. This is simply a tool for those looking for support in delaying smartphones and shaping healthier tech habits during childhood.

Thank you for being part of our school community and for all you do to support your child’s well-being.
